MIX NOTES 4. Blackout Mini Mix

March 23, 2014

For those of you unfamiliar with Blackout, it is an event where the audience is subject to either a live or Dj performance in complete darkness. The guys from Blackout (Harrier & Zinnerwell from Late Of The Pier/Swimming) asked me to put together a  mix for a special Blackout session held in Broadway Cinema. This mix is very much a deep,  immersive and beat-less soundscape. I wanted to bring together elements of jazz and blend them with the post-dubstep ambient sounds being produced by artists such as James Blake, Burial and early Hessle Audio at the time. My brief was to take people on a journey, to create a textural, dramatic experience. Although I had the lights on when making this mix, I tried to imagine what it would be like in complete darkness. I think of this more like a 'mix-scape' rather than a mix.
Turn off the lights, close your eyes, fall in and enjoy...
